Escambia County Emergency Medical Services

"At Your Service When It Matters Most"

Escambia County EMS is a Division of the Department of Public Safety. ECEMS is the primary provider of Advanced Life Support and Basic Life Support pre-hospital care for Escambia County. The Division employs 56 full time paramedics, 28 full time emergency medical technicians, 37 part time paramedics, 43 part time emergency medical technicians, seven shift supervisors, two quality assurance/training officers, five stock clerks, two EMS schedulers, three medical records technicians, one billing supervisor, eight office assistants, one administrative aide, one Medical Director, one EMS Manager and one EMS operations chief. The greatest strength of ECEMS is the employees. These men and women are true professionals, dedicated to providing excellent care.

Escambia County Emergency Medical Services is identified as an Enterprise Operation, indicating that their existence depends entirely upon user fees. Over the previous ten years, net collections for this department have routinely exceeded overall expenditures specific to personnel, operating services and capital equipment. Their ability to remain self-supporting has been an incredible accomplishment. A one-cent sales tax levied by the county has provided EMS an average of $300,000 each year to support replacement of their ambulances. EMS is assessed $500,000 annually in the form of an overhead charge to support the county’s general fund.

Excellence in Patient Care
Escambia County EMS is well known throughout the region for the high level of care that is provided to our citizens and the visitors to the County. In 2005, Escambia County EMS responded to over 39,000 calls. ECEMS provides state of the art equipment and a highly trained and experienced work force. This is evident by the many cards and letters that are sent from patients and their families to say thank you for the care they received.

Multi-tiered Response
In order to better coordinate and enhance the delivery of patient care, the ECEMS Medical Director provides medical direction to medical responders who are alerted throughout Escambia County. The Pensacola Fire Department, 16 Volunteer Fire Departments in Escambia County as well as the Escambia County Fire/Rescue career firefighters use First Responder protocols developed by ECEMS. Firefighters who respond to medical calls are all trained to at least the First Responder level. The closest necessary resources are dispatched through the County Communications Center to appropriately reduce response times in critical situations.

EMS Auxiliary
ECEMS has recently re-energized the Auxiliary program and increased the number of members. Auxiliary members function like full time and part time employees; they just do not get paid. Normally, individuals joining the ECEMS Auxiliary are fresh out of school with little or no field experience. The Auxiliary prepares them for situations they will encounter once they are hired by ECEMS. Members must possess the same credentials required for full time employees. We perform Driver’s License checks the same as we do for paid employees. They are required to participate in our immunization program, attend all departmental training and attend monthly organizational/training meetings. ECEMS Auxiliary members must function as an additional crewmember for a minimum of 12 hours per month. They participate in public relations and community events. As they gain more experience, they are allowed to operate the ambulances. Auxiliary members are evaluated during each shift and their progress is closely monitored. This environment provides the potential employee a venue for gaining the experience level that we require.
